The Iceberg
This icebreaker helps your group get to know each other better by
letting people share secrets. Its neat and gets people up and
moving as well
Equipment you will need
- Flip chart paper
- Coloured markers or crayons
- Sticky notes
Instructions
- Tell participants that we've probably all heard that most of
an iceberg is hidden under the water.
- Ask each person to draw an iceberg with a line through it
horizontally, so that part of the iceberg is above water, and
most of it is below the surface.
- Ask each person to write, below the water line, two or three
qualities, abilities or
interests about themselves that people are not likely to know.
- For example, someone who loves to bake might draw a cake.
Someone who has a
great singing voice could draw a few musical notes. Someone who
is great at building things might draw a hammer and nails. They
should not put their names on their pages.
- When they have finished, ask them to stick their pages to
the wall. Everyone walks around, and tries to identify who
created each iceberg. They write the name of the person they
think it is, on a sticky note, and attach it to the iceberg.
Debrief
- Go around the room and ask each person if they were
correctly identified. Ask all the
participants what new and interesting information they learned
about each other.
- You could link this one to the skill of feedback and maybe
Johari's Window i.e. the blind spot.
