Space Void

Space Void designed to see the team working together and relying on each other. Runs for about 25 minutes

Equipment you will need

  • 4 Magnetic Transponders per team, these can be pieces of wood typically A4 size, or even pieces of A4 card.
  • A start and finish line

Objective

Your team is stranded at one side of a space void, the void goes into infinity to the left and right and below. The only way across the void is by using the “magnetic transponders” provided. Transponders will only work in the void if they are in contact with a team member, and transponders left in the void without being in contact will be lost, any team members who touch the void with any part of their body will be lost.
Your goal is to get the whole team and all the transponders across to the other side – good luck!

Prepare yourself a start and a finish line, any distance will do provided they cannot reach the other side by using the 4 pads as stepping stones. Make it tricky to reach each transponder - jumping comes to mind.

Trainer Instructions

  • Split your group into teams of say 5-6 people.
  • Explain the story line for them. For the less creative people in the group, tell them they need to get across the floor using only the card provided.
  • Give then time to plan and practice, be prepared to answer any questions and to intervene if they are unsafe at this stage.
  • Make sure you reinforce the rule that the pads can only be in the void if in contact with a team member, this means they cannot throw them and they cannot leave them on the floor to use as stepping stones.
  • If any pad touches the zone and is not in contact with someone steal it (it’s up to you if you give it back)
  • If any team member touches down in the zone you can start them again, start the entire team again or eliminate the person.

Variations

  • Create a race atmosphere, get the teams to create a team chant
  • Silence some or all of the group members.
  • Change the time limits whilst in the middle of planning
  • Swap team members to explore the impact of change on a team
  • Play this outdoors in a car park or indoors in your training room
